PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE. IF YOU THINK CAR SEAT BELT OR MOTORBIKE HELMET: THINK CUSTOM-MADE MOUTHGUARD!

Any contact sport or physical activity can result in injury to the teeth and supporting structures. Possible consequences of an impact injury might be:

  • Laceration to the lips, tongue, or gums
  • Fracture of teeth or jawbones
  • Displaced or knocked-out teeth
  • Tooth death due to nerve injury
  • Jaw joint damage
  • Concussion

Custom made mouthguard can protect your teeth against the above for activities such as :

  • Rugby
  • Australian Rules Football
  • Soccer
  • Hockey
  • Martial Arts
  • Basket Ball
  • Baseball
  • Mountain Biking
  • Road Cycling
  • Event Horse Riding

There is worldwide consensus amongst all Professional Dental, Medical, and Sports Governing Associations that wearing a custom-made mouthguard is beneficial in the prevention of such injuries.

The RFU (Rugby Football Union – England) strongly recommends that gum shields are worn for any contact rugby sessions. It is also recommended that such gum shields should be custom-fitted.

It is the player’s responsibility to ensure that they wear adequate equipment to play the sport under World Rugby’s Laws of the Game. The type of mouthguard a player should wear is a matter of personal preference. However, failure to fit a mouthguard properly may reduce the effectiveness of the device. The IRFU (Irish Rugby Football Union) advises that all players attend their dentist to get fitted for a player-specific mouthguard.

According to recent reports, “off the shelf” mouth guards can cause more damage as they do not fit accurately. Furthermore, they do not remain in place at the point of impact. And this kind of mouth guard may not meet recommended specifications.

Documents show that an individual custom-made mouthguard using 4 mm bi-laminate layered mouthguard material offers far superior protection than any “ off the shelf ( boil and bite)” products.

Traumatic injury may result in significant psychological and aesthetic impact, not to mention the need for lifelong ongoing treatment together with considerable expense.

Starlight Dental Clinic uses 4 mm bi-laminate material which is the recommended standard and follows the laboratory manufacturing process advised by the world’s top Dental Universities. All Club, National and International teams engaged in physical contact sports use this product.
